  Ella had to admit that it almost felt good being home, though she had no desire to stay. Once inside the house, Tanner helped her out of her backpack and coat.

  Mori and Christa rushed down the hallway and stopped in their tracks. “Oh, my goddess,” Christa practically shouted. “You’re having a baby!”

  Ella laughed. “It seems so.”

  “Come into the living room and tell us all about it,” Christa said.

  Ella didn’t think they needed details on how this came about, but it would be good to catch up.

  “I’ll tell Mother and Father you are here,” Mori said.

  “Please do.” Ella wanted to get this over with.

  Tanner placed a hand on her back, and they followed Christa into the salon. No sooner had they sat on the sofa than her parents entered the room. Her father smiled, and her mother looked to be in shock. Okay, here it comes.

  Ella stood and hugged her father. “I can’t believe it,” he said. “You’re pregnant. This is wonderful news. Why didn’t you tell us?”

  She’d been prepared for that question. “I wanted to surprise you.” Actually, she’d wanted to shock her mother, who at this moment hadn’t moved or said anything.

  When Ella looked over at her, tears were streaming down her mother’s cheeks. Never in any scenario had Ella imagined that. “Mom, don’t worry. My child will not embarrass you.”

  Their son would be a dragon and a leopard shifter—or so she hoped.

  Her mother swiped a hand under her eyes and moved closer. “No, it’s not that. I’m just so happy.”

  Happy? Ella couldn’t remember that last time she had been. “You are okay with having a hybrid grandchild?”

  “Of course. Do you have a name for the baby?”

  “Not yet, but it won’t be Moran.”

  They all laughed.

  Her mom embraced Ella, and the shock of it all took a few seconds to sink in before Ella hugged her back. An actual feeling of love seemed to be radiating off her mother. And that felt good. Real good.

  Her mom broke the embrace. “I have so much to make up for.”

  “Nonsense.”

  “No. You know it, and I know it. But first, let me give that man of yours a hug.” Her mother embraced Tanner.

  At that moment, Ella realized that her life was complete. What she and Tanner had was special, and being able to now have her family share in her joy was beyond anything she could have imagined.

  “How about something to drink?” her mom asked.

  “We’d love some tea,” Ella said, even though Tanner would have preferred coffee.

  Her mom headed to the kitchen without calling for one of their servants. The firsts kept coming.

  Her father stepped up to them and shook Tanner’s hand. “Thank you for taking such good care of my girl. She looks happy.”

  “My pleasure, sir.”

  “Call me Jonathan.”

  Mori rushed over to Ella, clasped her hand, and then looked up at Tanner. “Do you think we could steal her for a bit? We have so much to catch up on.”

  “Sure.”

  “You go ahead, girls,” her father said. “Tanner and I have some contractor things to discuss anyway. I want his opinion on a new building to hold social gatherings for our clan to meet neighboring townspeople,” her father said.

  Joy filled her. Now this was a homecoming she’d never forget.
